THE STORY

Keeping It Real: Dani Mathews on Hype, Hooks, and the Promise Behind Every Post

"Do you remember when social media used to be just people that we used to follow? It was our friends from high school, our cousins, our mom's cousins."

That's the question Dani Mathews keeps coming back to, and the one she's bringing to TEDxUnityPark 2026.

Dani isn't just talking about social media, she works both sides of it. As the creator behind HealthyishDani, she has built a community of more than 250,000 followers, voted Best Local Instagram by readers of both GVLtoday and the Post & Courier. As the founder of Best Bites Media, she helps restaurants, hospitality brands, and small businesses tell their stories. At this year's TEDxUnityPark, her talk "The Social Media Dilemma: Authenticity vs. the Algorithm" asks what every customer has felt without naming it: when the post says one thing, does the place deliver? It's a simple idea, and honestly, an overdue one.

"Now it's the algorithm showing us exactly what it thinks we want to see."

Dani grew up in Greenville, back when downtown was a quieter place. "When I first left Greenville, there really wasn't a lot going on downtown," she remembers. "There weren't that many restaurants."

She spent more than 12 years in corporate tourism and hospitality, in advertising, PR, social media, and influencer marketing. Then she wanted to make something of her own.

"I was inspired to start flexing my own creative muscles and sharing my story on social media," she said during TEDxUnityPark Media Day. "I actually started by sharing recipes."

Almost a decade after she left, Dani came home to a very different city, and that's when it clicked. "It wasn't until I moved to Greenville that I fell in love with the food scene," she says. The recipes turned into restaurant reviews and nearby travel vlogs, and the vlogs turned into work behind the scenes for the restaurants and coffee shops she was covering.

"I just love that my passion for this scene here, I've been able to use that to start my own business and to help shine a spotlight on all of these smaller locally owned places that could really, really use that extra, extra sparkle and attention."

That business is Best Bites Media.

Working both sides, Dani started to see a pattern. The platforms reward whatever stops the scroll, and businesses feel the pull. Creators feel it too, and anyone who has scrolled a food account knows the hook.

"I just had the best coffee in the world. You've got to try it," she said at Media Day. "Or this is the best hot dog east of the Mississippi. But based on what? Have they tried every hot dog east of the Mississippi? Probably not."

It's funny because it's true, and she'd know. She makes those videos for a living. We know a little something about it from the film side too: it's the trailer that's better than the movie.

"The experience that consumers have at these businesses should be exactly the same as it is portrayed online."

None of that makes her anti social media. She just wants it to tell the truth. The most successful brands, as she puts it, "are not the ones chasing every trend, but the ones using social media to amplify what already makes them unique."

She has taken that message to Clemson University classrooms and to Endeavor. Spend five minutes with her and you forget about the follower count. She's the friend who tells you which place is actually good.

"I understand both sides of the equation," as she puts it. "I am both the creator navigating platform algorithms and the strategist helping businesses grow within them."

Her talk lands at a moment when a big following can look a lot like expertise. "Even if they have a lot of followers," Dani says, "it might not make them an expert on the subject."

TEDxUnityPark's 2026 theme is Multiply. As our co-organizer Dr. Kaipo Sotelo puts it, we don't need 20 times the audience, we want 20 times the impact. Dani's talk is the same idea pointed at your feed: reach is easy to multiply, and it doesn't mean much if the place doesn't live up to it.

"There seems to be a brand new restaurant opening every week. There is a Michelin star right here on Main Street."
"When brands stay true to who they are,"* as she puts it, *"social media becomes a tool for meaningful connection, sustainable growth, and stronger local economies."

What many don't know about Dani is that this stage has been on her list for a while. "I actually had it on my bingo card, or you could call it a vision board, for this year," she said. "I did apply last year. I almost didn't apply again, but I'm so glad that I did." Out of just under 300 applicants, she was selected.

We think this one is going to hit home for anyone who has ever driven across town for "the best" anything. Dani's talk is a call to close the gap between the feed and the front door, and a challenge to every brand in this city to show people what's actually true.

"Is it going to be exactly how it was portrayed online? Or is it going to be completely different? That is the social media dilemma. Authenticity versus the algorithm."
